Search for a plastic factory in Egypt and you get hundreds of companies. Most of them cannot make your product, and you will not find out which ones until you have already spent a week emailing them.
The reason is that plastics is not a single industry. It is five different manufacturing processes that happen to share a raw material. The plant making garden chairs and the plant making food packaging film both buy polymer resin, and that is roughly where the similarity ends. Different machines, different tooling, different engineers, different customers.
Sorting this out before you make contact saves more time than any other step in sourcing here.
The five types
Film and flexible packaging
Extrusion. Molten polymer is blown or cast into thin film, then printed, laminated or converted.
Output: packaging rollstock, bags, FIBC and drum liners, form fill seal film, printed laminates, courier bags, and agricultural films for greenhouses and mulching.
Buyers: food manufacturers, co packers, farms and greenhouse operations, logistics companies.
Injection moulding
Molten polymer is injected into a steel mould and takes its shape.
Output: chairs and tables, crates and bins, caps and closures, handles, technical components.
Blow moulding
Output: bottles, hollow containers, water and oil jerry cans, PET preforms.
Pipe and profile extrusion
Output: water and drainage pipe, window and door profiles, anything with a constant cross section running continuously.
Thermoforming
A plastic sheet is heated and vacuum formed into a mould.
Output: cups, trays, yoghurt and cheese pots, punnets.
The test that sorts it in one step
Look at the shape of your finished product, not the material it is made from. Almost everyone gets this backwards and starts from the polymer.
Flexible, supplied on a reel or as a bag or a sheet cover, means film and flexible packaging. Rigid and three dimensional with thick walls means injection moulding. Hollow with a neck or opening means blow moulding. Tubular or continuous with a fixed cross section means pipe and profile extrusion. A thin formed container like a yoghurt pot means thermoforming.
That single question eliminates four of the five categories in about ten seconds.
Where Egyptian plants cluster
Manufacturing concentrates in a few industrial cities. 6th of October City sits west of Cairo. 10th of Ramadan City sits to the east. Borg El Arab is near Alexandria and closer to the port.
This matters more than it looks if you plan to audit suppliers. Plants in one city can usually be visited in a single day. Splitting a shortlist across Cairo and Alexandria turns one trip into two.
What to send with your first enquiry
Whichever category you need, have this ready:
- A description of the finished product and what it has to do
- Expected volume, monthly or annual
- Any technical specification you already hold: thickness, dimensions, material
- Food contact requirements, if the product touches food
- Print requirements and colour count
- Your destination port and preferred Incoterms
That last one gets left out constantly, and it is the one that makes a quotation comparable. A price without terms tells you nothing, and you will end up rebuilding every quote by hand to compare them.
Why buyers look at Egypt
Egypt is a short shipping distance from Southern Europe, which shortens lead times against Asian supply and makes second sourcing practical rather than theoretical. Production costs are competitive. Certification is where suppliers vary most, so treat it as a filter rather than an afterthought, and read the scope on any certificate you are given.
Where we fit
We make film and flexible packaging. We do not do injection moulding, blow moulding, pipe or thermoforming, and we would rather point you to the right category than take a meeting about a product we cannot make.
We have produced polyethylene film since 1998 at our plant in 6th of October City, at thicknesses from 15 to 200 micron, with rotogravure and flexo printing up to eight colours per side, and laminate structures including PE/PE, BOPP/PE, PET/PE and PET/Al/PE.
